Central Perch Reading Café Provides Perks for Teens

Garden Grove, CA (November 30, 2010) – On September 22nd, Boys & Girls Clubs of Garden Grove (BGCGG) at McGarvin Intermediate officially opened its “Central Perch Reading Café”, a welcoming and modern atmosphere that promotes leisure reading among teens.  The $10,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation allows the café to be a high yield center with over 130 teens enrolled.

Central Perch offers perks such as new furniture, books, Macbooks, and magazines, ongoing “Reading Race” competitions, field trip opportunities to local libraries, and convenient hours during lunch and after school.

Currently, students are also utilizing the café to create movie parodies based on books such as Twilight, by combining reading, scriptwriting, and performing arts. The project will be submitted in an organization-wide BGCGG film festival to be held onDecember 7, 2010 at Main Branch

“The Walmart Foundation grant has enabled BGCGG to provide a quality program for our students with everything they need for supplemental learning in a great setting!,” stated Henry Metcalf, Site Coordinator at McGarvin Intermediate.

A great part of the program’s overall success is due to the support of Dr. Lila Jenkins, McGarvin’s principal, as well as the entire school administration. For more information about Central Perch Reading Café program, please contact (714) 530-5399x14.
