TRC (Truancy Reduction Center) assists police officers, the school district, and families by offering services that support students who are truant.

Definition of a Truant
According to California Law, a truant is defined as a student who misses more than 30 minutes of instruction without an excuse three times during the school year. These students must be reported to the proper school authority in order to emphasize the importance of school attendance and is intended to help minimize interference with instruction. [California Education Code Section 48260 (a)]
Definition of a Chronic Truant
According to California Law, a chronic truant is defined as a student subject to compulsory full-time education or to compulsory continuation education, who is absent from school without a valid excuse for ten percent or more of the school days in one school year from the date of enrolment to the current date provided that the appropriate school district officer or employee has complied with EC sections 48260, 48260.5, 48261, 48262, 48263, and 48291. [California Education Code Section EC 48263.6]
The vision of our program is to:
Remove barriers to education by increasing student attendance, preventing school drop-outs, and by connecting students and their families to appropriate community resources.
We do this by:

Educating students and their families about attendance laws and policies in the state of California and school district.

Assessing the safety and needs/interest of our students and match students with appropriate resources and interest-based services.

Monitoring attendance of students for a period of one to three months and keep school and parents aware of progress

Assigning community service hours to students to encourage a sense of belonging and responsibility.

Offering ongoing case management and counseling to ensure students are improving attendance.

Fill out the referral form completely (please include student ID number).

Email, mail, or fax referrals to TRC.
Once we receive the referral, it will be processed to ensure that the student’s needs can be met at TRC. The family will then be contacted to set up an appointment to begin services. TRC staff will follow up with referring agency to ensure proper follow-up and communication.
Upon receiving a referral, the Truancy Reduction Center will:

Contact the family and schedule an intake appointment for the student and parent.

Conduct an intake, which reviews the California Attendance Laws and District Policies in regards to truancy.

Address the underlying reasons for not attending school and connect families to appropriate community agencies and resources.

Monitor student attendance for a period of 30-90 days and assign 10-20 hours of community service, in or

der to help them become responsible citizens, while also, providing them with the opportunity to gain experience through serving others.

Follow up with referring agent to ensure continued communication about student progress in the program.

At the end of the monitoring period, a summary report will be sent to the referring agent.

Our students are assigned community service hours in order to help them become more responsible citizens, while also providing them with the opportunity to gain experience through serving others.

Community Service hours can be completed at any non-profit organization. Hours can be completed at any local church, synagogues, schools, hospitals, dog pounds, thrift shops, soup kitchen, libraries, etc. |
Internships are available for Interns and Caseworkers who provide case management, counseling services, and community resources for families with youth who are 18 years old or younger.
Requirements for Internships

Currently enrolled or have completed a degree in Counseling, Human Services, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, or related program

Minimum of One Semester/ Two Quarters

Bilingual in Spanish or Vietnamese

Must be over the age of 21
